Professor Meguid is an internationally renowned researcher with major contributions in the fields of aerospace engineering, nano-and micromechanics, computational mechanics with emphasis on finite element modelling, contact mechanics, and engineered materials (smart structures, FGM asnd Cellular structures). He has made a number of major contributions in these areas. Specifically, his atomistic based continuum approach to nanomechanics, micromechanical response of interacting microdefects and inhomogeneities in advanced composites, his treatment of the coupled electro-mechanical behaviour of multifunctional materials are highly regarded by the scientific community. His research efforts which focus on the development of a new strategy to treat contact problems in solid and shell structures under quasistatic and dynamic loading conditions is not only considered to be highly original but also of great industrial importance. His efforts in determining the fatigue fracture behaviour of aerospace materials in the presence of residual stresses have been rewarded by a number of research contracts from the aerospace and automotive industries. In addition, he is currently involved in developing nano-reinforced interfaces. Specifically, he is introducing small weight fractions of alumina nano-powders and carbon nano-tubes into epoxy adhesives to increase the strength and toughness of the adhesive layer and the resulting interface(s).

Professor Meguid has been involved in comprehensive design/analysis studies concerning morphed wing design using shaped memory alloy (SMA), aeroengine compressor and turbine disc assemblies; partially and fully filled fluid couplings; landing gear for a commercial aircraft; fixtureless assembly; intelligent grippers using smart materials; intelligent gantry robots for removal of land mines; shock absorbers for electrically powered vehicles; suspension systems for subway cars; power steering pump drive assemblies; porous dental implants; finger implants; and external fixation devices, to name a few. Professor Meguid is actively pursuing research on deformation localisation in cellular materials. His work on the crashworthiness of foam-filled ultralight hydroformed automotive structures is well supported by General Motors of Canada, Cymat Inc., Materials and Manufacturing Centre of Excellence (MMO) and NSERC.

Professor Meguid has collaborated with Professor E. Bogoch, of the Department of Surgery at U of T, to improve the design of a number of finger implants. He is also contributing to a major effort by the Department of Dentistry concerning design analysis of dental implants, osseointegration and bone resorption. He has recently joined forces with Dr. Cari Whine, Director of Biomechanics Lab at Sunnybrook to formulate the problem of hip replacement using cellular rather than a continuum approach.

Professor Meguid's efforts in the above mentioned areas are well supported and highly regarded by his peers. This is evidenced by the list (quality and quantity) of research contracts undertaken, the large number of Journal publications, reviews of the published work and the number of scholarly addresses given and the close association with numerous scientific and industrial organisations and government agencies.
