The conference will be held at the new campus of the American University in Cairo (AUC), Egypt. AUC was founded in 1919 by the American Mission in Egypt, sponsored by the United Presbyterian Church of North America. For its first 27 years, the university was shaped by its founding president, Dr. Charles A. Watson. He wanted to create an English-language university. He also believed that such a university would greatly improve America's understanding of the area.

The Engineering Program started in 1971 as a Materials Science and Engineering Unit within the Science Department. The program changed significantly in 1981 and new requirements leading to a B.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering were implemented. The Department of Mechanical Engineering has been ABET accredited since 1997, and offers five concentrations (Design, Industrial, Materials and Manufacturing, Mechatronics, and Power).
